Sky News was forced to interrupt its programme on Monday (17 August) as Russia issued a stark warning to the UK. Presenter Jonathan Samuels told viewers: "I've got some breaking news coming into us here at Sky. In the last few minutes, the Russian Embassy to the UK has published this statement."
The statement referenced reports that the "Kyiv regime is using British drones to carry out strikes deep inside Russian territory," accusing London of "deliberately opting for an escalation of the Ukraine crisis, while hypocritically professing a desire for peace."
Russia's warning and UK response
"In doing so, the United Kingdom is acting as an accomplice and co-perpetrator of the bloody crimes and terrorist attacks committed by the Ukrainian neo-Nazis seeking to contain Russia and inflict maximum damage on it," the statement read. Samuels relayed that London's actions "will inevitably carry consequences for which it will have to answer," warning that the "deeper" the UK's involvement and the "greater" its support for Ukraine, the "higher the price it will pay."
The Ministry of Defence responded on Tuesday (18 August), stating: "Britain stands shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine and we are committed to providing the equipment Ukraine needs to defend itself against Putin's illegal invasion." The statement added: "Russia should be in no doubt about the resolve of this Government to stand against Russian aggression, in Ukraine and against the UK and our allies."
Public reaction on X
The news divided viewers, with several taking to X. One wrote: "The UK should not be getting so involved in this conflict. You expect Russia not to retaliate when they are being bombed effectively with the help of the UK. Do not underestimate Putin if he is backed into a corner. My view." Another remarked: "I have a feeling that the UK will get hit particularly hard due to the incredibly weak leadership (almost non-existent) and the civil strife currently happening..."
Others supported the UK's stance. A third tweeted: "Russia's idle threats will not intimidate Britain nor stop us in supporting Ukraine from defending itself from an imperialist war of aggression by Russia." A fourth added: "Putin won't strike the UK, he's too scared of the consequences."
Background on UK drone supply
In April, the Ministry of Defence confirmed the UK would supply tens of thousands of drones and long-range strike devices to Kyiv. A spokesperson said: "We are committed to providing the equipment Ukraine needs to defend itself against Putin's illegal invasion. This includes over 150,000 drones this year, cutting-edge Stone Cloak devices that hinder Russian air defences and innovative low-cost cruise missiles."
