Authorities in Northern California have made seven arrests in connection with a catastrophic fireworks warehouse explosion that occurred last July, resulting in the deaths of seven individuals and injuries to two others. The announcement was made on Friday, marking a significant development in the investigation into the tragic incident.

The explosion took place at a fireworks storage facility near the small farming community of Esparto in Yolo County. The blast ignited a massive fire and forced the cancellation of nearby Fourth of July celebrations, causing widespread disruption and grief in the local area.
The Yolo County District Attorney's Office is scheduled to announce the indictments for those arrested during a news conference on Friday. According to jail records, several of the individuals taken into custody are facing murder charges, highlighting the severity of the allegations.
Key Figures Among Those Arrested
Among those arrested are Samuel Machado and Tammy Machado, who owned the warehouse located approximately 40 miles northwest of Sacramento. At the time of the explosion, Samuel Machado served as a lieutenant with the Yolo County Sheriff's Office, while his wife, Tammy Machado, was a non-sworn administrative employee. Both were placed on leave following the incident.
Kenneth Chee, the owner of Devastating Pyrotechnics, was arrested in Florida. His company's illegal fireworks were being stored at the warehouse at the time of the blast. Chee appeared in a Florida courtroom on Friday and was informed that he will be extradited to California within the week, as reported by KCRA-TV.
Additional Arrests and Connections
Authorities also arrested Jack Lee, the operations manager for Devastating Pyrotechnics, and Gary Chan Jr., whose name appears on the company's federal license. These arrests underscore the broad scope of the investigation into the warehouse's operations and safety compliance.
Craig Cutright, the owner of Blackstar Fireworks, which operated at the Esparto property owned by the Machados, was also taken into custody. Cutright, who served as a volunteer firefighter for the Esparto Fire District, was additionally listed as an employee of Devastating Pyrotechnics, according to KCRA-TV.
Ongoing Legal Proceedings
One of Cutright's employees, Ronald Botelho III, has been in custody since December. Jail records indicate that more than a dozen new charges were filed against him on Thursday, suggesting that the legal ramifications of the explosion continue to unfold.
The arrests come nearly nine months after the devastating explosion, reflecting the thorough and complex nature of the investigation. Authorities are working to hold those responsible accountable for the loss of life and injuries sustained in the incident.
