Florida Mother Sentenced to 60 Years for Failing to Protect Son from Brutal Abuse
A mother in Florida has been handed a devastating prison sentence after she stood by and watched her boyfriend violently beat and abuse her five-year-old son. Taylor Schaefer, aged 30, received a 60-year sentence on Friday after entering no contest pleas to 25 felony charges related to child abuse and neglect.
Surveillance Footage Reveals Horrific Abuse
According to a release from the Office of the State Attorney RJ Larizza, Schaefer admitted to watching her son be routinely attacked by her 35-year-old live-in boyfriend, Shawn Stone. Surveillance footage captured Stone beating the child with a mop over a bedwetting accident, leaving the boy with a fractured skull. Investigators noted that Child Protective Services discovered approximately 46 injuries on the boy during a medical examination.
The Volusia Sheriff's Office stated, "On several occasions the boy was visibly injured and limping in [Schaefer's] presence, but received no care or medical attention." Video evidence also showed the boy had been repeatedly left with his hands bound behind his back for hours at a time, including one instance where he was tied from around 6:40 PM until 2:00 PM the following day.
Multiple Children Suffered in the Home
The investigation revealed that all three of Schaefer's children suffered neglect and abuse. Another child was reportedly sprayed with boiling water, forced to drink it, and beaten with household objects. A third child in the home did not receive proper nutrition or care for a serious medical condition. The sheriff's office added, "The victim was also tied up, placed in a dog cage and often punished via deprivation of food."
State Attorney RJ Larizza emphasized that surveillance video and interviews with the oldest child corroborated that Schaefer had knowledge of the abuse Stone was inflicting on her children and "did not intervene or protect them." Text messages between Stone and Schaefer further revealed that the mother participated in the neglect and abuse.
Legal Consequences and Ongoing Case
Schaefer was found guilty on all 25 charges, including aggravated child abuse, kidnapping, and tampering with a witness. She was also sentenced to a concurrent 54 years in prison for failing to report child abuse, abandonment, and neglect. Larizza commented, "A mother's sacred duty is to love and protect her children - not to viciously beat, torture and demean them. It is a brutal reality that some mothers commit shamefully violent and cruel acts upon their children."
The case against Shawn Stone remains ongoing as he is held at the Volusia County Branch Jail. Stone faces approximately 24 charges, including aggravated child abuse and other charges related to repeated abuse and neglect. His legal proceedings continue as authorities seek justice for the severe suffering inflicted upon these vulnerable children.
