In a significant case of agricultural crime, five men have been sentenced for the theft of 14 cows from a farm in Llanerch-y-medd, Anglesey, in December 2022. The stolen livestock, valued at more than £20,000, were transported using a lorry to a farm in Stoke-on-Trent, which was owned by one of the defendants, Clifford Smith.
Investigation and Recovery Efforts
Police authorities utilised CCTV footage and detailed phone analysis to identify the culprits and trace the movement of the cows. It is believed that the stolen animals were intended to fraudulently replace Smith's fallen stock, highlighting a premeditated aspect to the crime.
Positive Outcome for the Victim
Remarkably, two of the stolen cows gave birth after the theft. Both the cows and their newborn calves were successfully recovered by law enforcement and returned to the victim, mitigating some of the financial and emotional impact of the incident.
Sentencing at Caernarfon Crown Court
All five defendants – Liam Kettleborough, Jack Billington, Stanley Jones, Michael McLeod, and Clifford Smith – faced justice at Caernarfon Crown Court, where they were sentenced for their respective roles in the orchestrated theft. This case underscores the serious consequences of livestock crime in rural communities.
