A mother has expressed outrage after her teenage daughter was attacked by a group of children outside a Zara store in Bristol, with allegations that staff stood by and watched without intervening. The incident occurred at the Cabot Circus shopping centre on Wednesday evening, around 7.45pm, sparking a police investigation and raising concerns about a potential link to the disturbing "school wars Red vs Blue" social media trend.
Horrifying Assault in Shopping Centre
The victim, a teenage girl, was reportedly walking to a bus stop when she was approached by a group of boys and girls. Seeking refuge, she entered the Zara clothing store, but was allegedly followed and surrounded by the same group. According to her mother, named Stacey, staff members at the store did nothing to help, and the violence erupted when her daughter left the premises.
Stacey described the scene as her daughter being followed by a "mob" of children, with staff continuing to look on without offering assistance. "She left the store because no one was helping, they just stared at her," the mother stated. The girl was then attacked outside, though Stacey emphasised that her daughter did not engage in the violence and "didn't have a clue what was going on."
Police Investigation and Arrests
Avon and Somerset Police have confirmed that the girl was "attacked by a group of boys and girls believed to be aged between 12 and 18." In an updated statement, the force revealed that three teenagers have been arrested on suspicion of various offences, including affray, racially aggravated fear of violence, and grievous bodily harm with intent. The investigation is ongoing, with police urging anyone with information to come forward.
Neighbourhood Chief Inspector Keith Smith described the assault as "sickening" and noted that it is not yet clear what led to the incident. However, police are reportedly investigating whether it is connected to the recent "school wars" trend online, which involves conflicts between students from different schools. Smith stated, "We are keeping an open mind as to whether that is connected," adding that there may have been an exchange beforehand about which schools those involved attend.
Mother's Criticism and Aftermath
The heartbroken mother slammed the response from multiple parties, citing "multiple failures throughout the whole evening." She criticised Zara staff, the bus driver, and people at the bus stop for allegedly standing by and watching. "I've worked in retail - if that happened in my store, I'd do my utmost to protect that child," Stacey said. She also claimed her daughter felt "ushered off" the scene, as if authorities "couldn't wait to get her off."
Fortunately, the teenage girl was not severely injured, suffering only concussion, bruising to her cheeks, and heel marks on her legs. She was rushed to hospital following the public incident, and videos purporting to show the attack have circulated on social media, according to local reports.
Responses and Community Concern
A spokesperson for Zara UK expressed that their "thoughts are with the victim of this terrible incident" and confirmed that the company is assisting police with their investigation. Chief Inspector Smith acknowledged that the incident "will understandably cause concern in our communities" and reassured the public that an investigation is being carried out at pace to identify those responsible.
