A murder investigation has been launched after the body of a 21-year-old woman was discovered in a house in Batley, West Yorkshire, following an attempted armed robbery at a nearby Asda supermarket. The victim has been named locally as Courtney Angus, described by neighbours as a “beautiful girl with a beautiful soul”.
Police were called to the Asda store in Dewsbury shortly after 9.21pm on Saturday following reports of a man brandishing a knife while shoplifting. After arresting a 37-year-old suspect, officers were told that a woman was dead inside a property on Norfolk Street. Forcing entry, they found Courtney’s body. The arrested man remains in custody on suspicion of murder.
Courtney’s stepfather, Andy Ledgard, paid tribute: “She was just a lovely girl who has her life taken away before she had a chance. I loved her and took her on as my own. I don’t know what she was doing at that man’s house. She did not deserve to die.” He added that he has not slept for two days and is desperate for answers.
Neighbours described the suspect as a quiet man who worked odd jobs, including window cleaning. One neighbour, Adil Hussein, said: “He is a nice enough guy. Never knew him to get into any trouble or be violent. Certainly never thought he would carry knives or hurt anybody.” Children’s toys were visible in an upstairs window, but no children were present when police arrived.
Detective Chief Inspector Dan Bates said: “This is clearly a very serious incident, where a young woman has lost her life. There is a heightened police presence in Dewsbury today as we work to establish the full circumstances. We do not believe there is any wider risk to the public at this time.” Police are appealing for anyone with information, CCTV, doorbell or dashcam footage to come forward.
