A Republican congressional candidate has offered a 'prison care package' to her Democrat opponent, who faces federal charges over a protest outside an immigration detention facility. The package included holy water, with the Republican claiming the Democrat appeared 'possessed'.
Rocío Cleveland attempted to hand the items to Kat Abughazaleh on Sunday at a meet-and-greet event for candidates in Illinois' 9th congressional district. The bag contained a toothbrush, which Cleveland said Abughazaleh would need 'to protect yourself' in prison.
Cleveland also said she believed Abughazaleh, a Palestinian American, would require holy water because 'it seems like you're possessed'. Abughazaleh declined to accept the gift, and as Cleveland repacked the items, she said: 'I'll be praying for you.'
