Andy Burnham, the frontrunner to become the next Prime Minister later this month, has categorically ruled out calling an early general election if he takes over from Keir Starmer. In a wide-ranging Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on Reddit, Burnham also pledged to uphold the state pension triple lock, a key commitment in Labour's 2024 election manifesto.
No Snap Election Despite Opposition Demands
Responding to a user who asked, “I assume you’re going to call an election? If not why not?” Burnham replied bluntly: “No. As I said in my speech on Monday, I’m going to work to the 2024 manifesto.” Despite Labour's substantial majority secured just two years ago, some opposition parties have called for a snap vote as the country prepares for a change in leadership. Burnham emphasised his focus remains on delivering the promises made to voters in the last general election.
Triple Lock Commitment Stands
When questioned about the cost of the triple lock—which ensures pensions increase by the highest of average earnings, inflation, or 2.5%—Burnham acknowledged the debate but reaffirmed his commitment. “I appreciate there’s a lot of debate about this but it is important that the commitment in the manifesto stands,” he said. Labour MP Callum Anderson backed Burnham, stating the government should respect its manifesto pledges while using the next few years to have a “candid public conversation” about delivering a dignified old age for all.
Defence and Foreign Policy
Burnham also addressed defence spending, promising to ensure the defence investment plan (Dip) unveiled this week is “fully funded.” The plan led to the resignation of Defence Secretary John Healey. “The world is changing fast and the challenges are multiplying. The defence investment plan represents a step change in Britain’s response to this new reality and I will ensure that it is fully funded,” Burnham said.
On foreign policy, Burnham affirmed unwavering support for Ukraine, stating “Yes 100%” when asked if he would match Starmer’s level of backing. He also committed to building on the government’s efforts to reset relations with Europe, including exploring a more ambitious trade agreement. “Yes, I will build on the good work the Government has already done in this area,” he replied to a user named “LordRanger.”
Leadership Timeline
Burnham is expected to be confirmed as Labour leader on July 17 unopposed, with his appointment as Prime Minister following three days later. The Reddit AMA, held on Friday, covered a range of topics from domestic policy to international affairs, as Burnham prepares to take the helm.
