Carey Mulligan Honoured with CBE by King Charles at Windsor Castle Ceremony
Acclaimed actress Carey Mulligan was presented with a Commander of the British Empire honour by King Charles during a prestigious investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle. The BAFTA-winning star, aged 40, was supported at the event by her husband, musician Marcus Mumford, who she married in 2012.
An 'Extraordinary' Recognition for Services to Drama
Following the ceremony, Mulligan expressed that she felt 'extraordinary' to receive the CBE for her services to drama and the performing arts. She proudly posed with her honour while wearing a stylish cream boucle jacket paired with oversized black trousers for the occasion.
The actress reflected on her career, stating: 'I feel so unbelievably lucky to get to do a job that I really, really love. To have this kind of recognition on top is just sort of extraordinary to me.'
Family Support and Career Highlights
Mulligan and Mumford, who have been married for over a decade, are parents to three children: Evelyn, aged eight, Wilfred, five, and a third child born in September 2023 whose name remains private. The couple's relationship has a charming backstory, having initially met as children at a summer camp where they became pen pals.
Mulligan recalled their early connection during a television appearance: 'We ended up going to the same summer camp when we were kids so we became pen pals after and that's how we kept in touch. Then there was about 10 years when we lost touch and then we reconnected.'
Her distinguished career includes:
- Winning the BAFTA for Best Actress in 2010 for her role in An Education
- Receiving three Oscar nominations for An Education, Promising Young Woman, and Maestro in 2023
- Starring in the critically acclaimed film Promising Young Woman
- An upcoming role in the Netflix adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia alongside Daniel Craig and Meryl Streep
Bond Speculation and Future Projects
Following the investiture, Mulligan was asked about who might replace Daniel Craig as James Bond after his departure from the iconic role in 2021. She responded thoughtfully: 'Oh, my gosh, that's so hard. Really hard, isn't it? He's got big shoes to fill. I think the thing about Daniel is that he was an extraordinary actor. I think the main thing is it's just got to be someone who's an incredible actor.'
The actress is set to appear later this year in the highly anticipated Netflix adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia, where she will star alongside Daniel Craig and Meryl Streep. This project marks another significant milestone in her already impressive filmography.
Reflecting on her early correspondence with Mumford, Mulligan humorously noted their use of fax machines during their pen pal days and suggested: 'We need to get kids back doing the pen pal thing again. It's a good thing.' The couple's wedding day memory also surfaced, with Mulligan sharing that Mumford had to carry her because her shoes were too painful to walk in.
