Carey Mulligan Receives CBE Honour from King Charles

Actress Carey Mulligan has been awarded a CBE for services to drama at an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle, with her husband Marcus Mumford watching on. The 40-year-old was made a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in the New Year Honours list, receiving the honour from King Charles on Tuesday morning.

Mulligan, best known for her Oscar-nominated performances in An Education and Promising Young Woman, and for her role as Daisy Buchanan in The Great Gatsby, later posed with the medal alongside Mumford, 39, lead singer of Mumford & Sons.

She will join Daniel Craig and Meryl Streep in Greta Gerwig's upcoming Netflix adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia, describing it as a “dream job”. Asked about who should take over as James Bond, she said: “He's got big shoes to fill... the main thing is it's just got to be someone who's an incredible actor.”

Reflecting on her career, Mulligan said: “I feel so unbelievably lucky to get to do a job that I really, really love. To have this kind of recognition on top is just sort of extraordinary to me.” She won the Bafta Award for best actress for An Education in 2010.

Also honoured on Tuesday were Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, former Chief of the Defence Staff, who was made a Knight Grand Cross; Hilary McGrady, director-general of the National Trust, who became a CBE; and FGM survivor and campaigner Valerie Lolomari, who was appointed an MBE for services to the prevention of violence against women and girls.
