British Woman, 25, Faces Life Imprisonment in Dubai Over Drug Allegations
Brit, 25, Faces Life in Dubai Prison Over Drug Charges

Antonia Bettridge, a 25-year-old British woman from St Helens in Merseyside, is confronting the possibility of life imprisonment in Dubai following her arrest on suspicion of drug-related offences. According to legal representatives from Detained in Dubai (DID), Bettridge relocated to the United Arab Emirates in November 2023, initially working as a sports coach before moving into the property sector and pursuing qualifications as a personal trainer.

Arrest and Charges Under UAE Narcotics Legislation

While the precise date of her arrest remains unspecified, it is believed to have taken place at the beginning of last month. Legal advisers have confirmed that she is being held under the UAE's stringent narcotics laws, specifically on suspicion of "possession of narcotics with intent to promote." If convicted, this charge carries severe penalties, including a potential fine of AED 200,000 and a life sentence. Notably, DID has highlighted that Dubai authorities do not require proof of intent to promote or distribute for such charges, as reported by the Liverpool Echo.

Family's Distress and Regional Concerns

Antonia's mother, who has not been publicly named, expressed profound distress over the situation. She stated, "Antonia's whole life revolves around fitness and healthy living. She doesn't live a party lifestyle. She moved to Dubai to build something positive for herself. We are devastated and just want clarity about what has happened." She added, "With everything happening in the region at the moment, it is incredibly frightening knowing our daughter is in detention and we cannot reach her. We are worried sick. We just want her to be safe and to have the opportunity to prepare her defence properly."

Radha Stirling, CEO of Detained in Dubai, who is assisting the family, emphasised that the broader context of regional conflict in the Middle East has heightened anxiety for families with loved ones detained in the UAE. Stirling remarked, "When there is regional instability or security incidents, families naturally become even more concerned about loved ones who are already in a vulnerable situation. It reinforces why allowing defendants to prepare their cases from outside detention, where appropriate, is so important. We hope the FCDO supports her application for bail pending any trial at the very least."

Previous Legal History in the UK

Antonia Bettridge previously appeared at Liverpool Crown Court in September 2023, where she was found guilty of possessing criminal property. The case stemmed from an incident on December 22, 2021, when she was stopped by police after exiting the M62 at junction nine for Winwick, Warrington. Initially claiming she had no cash, officers discovered £610 in her handbag and an additional £8,000 in her vehicle's glove compartment. It was later revealed she had driven to Gordano Services on the M5 near Bristol, a journey of approximately three hours and 170 miles from her home on Greenfield Road in Dentons Green, before returning north.

As a result, the personal trainer admitted to possessing criminal property and was released from court with a 12-month community order. This included up to 30 days of rehabilitation activities and 75 hours of unpaid work, along with an order to pay £1,200 in court costs.

FCDO Involvement and Travel Advisory

A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) previously stated, "We are supporting a British woman detained in the UAE and are in contact with the local authorities." In light of escalating regional tensions, British expats in Dubai have been urged to remain vigilant. The ongoing conflict between Iran and the US, along with its allies, has led to widespread airspace closures across the Middle East, causing significant flight disruptions. Thousands of stranded individuals are expected to return home this week as airlines increase flight schedules, though cancellations continue to affect departures from the UAE.

Authorities advise those in the United Arab Emirates to avoid areas near security or military facilities, follow local instructions, and stay informed through official news channels. The Foreign Office now recommends against all but essential travel to the UAE. Since the onset of US-Israeli attacks, Iran has launched assaults on US bases and allies in the region, with verified footage showing the US consulate building in Dubai engulfed in flames after a drone strike. The Dubai Media Office has stated that relevant authorities are assessing the situation and taking steps to ensure public safety, urging residents to rely on official updates.
