Tory MP Johnny Mercer has launched a scathing attack on former immigration minister Robert Jenrick, accusing him of obstructing efforts to resettle Afghan refugees in the UK. Mercer, a prominent backbencher, claimed Jenrick's approach had caused significant delays and complications in the process.
In a fiery exchange, Mercer stated, "The reality is that Robert Jenrick actively worked against the Afghan resettlement scheme, creating unnecessary barriers for those who risked their lives to support British forces."
Defence Secretary Backs Mercer's Claims
Defence Secretary Ben Wallace appeared to support Mercer's allegations, suggesting that Jenrick's department had been "less than cooperative" with the Ministry of Defence on the issue. Wallace emphasised the moral obligation to protect Afghan allies who assisted UK troops during the conflict.
The controversy stems from the UK's Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy (ARAP), designed to help interpreters and other support staff escape Taliban retaliation. Critics argue the scheme has been too slow, leaving many vulnerable Afghans in danger.

The public spat highlights growing tensions within the Conservative Party over immigration policy. Jenrick, who resigned as immigration minister last year, has positioned himself as a hardliner on migration issues.
