Ukrainian engineers have successfully restored power to the capital Kyiv after a devastating overnight drone assault by Russian forces targeted critical energy infrastructure across the country.
The massive coordinated attack, described as one of the most severe in recent months, saw waves of Iranian-made Shahed drones strike power facilities, plunging parts of the capital into darkness and forcing authorities to implement emergency blackouts.
Heroic Restoration Efforts
Despite the scale of the destruction, repair crews worked through the night in dangerous conditions to bring electricity back to affected areas. Ukrenergo, Ukraine's national power company, reported that their teams had managed to stabilise the grid within hours of the attacks concluding.
"Our energy workers are true heroes," said a government spokesperson. "They're working under constant threat of further attacks to keep the country running."
Air Defence Successes
Ukrainian air defence forces demonstrated remarkable effectiveness during the assault, reportedly shooting down dozens of incoming drones before they could reach their targets. However, the sheer volume of the attack meant some drones inevitably penetrated defensive lines.
The overnight operation marked yet another chapter in Russia's ongoing campaign to cripple Ukraine's energy infrastructure as winter approaches, a strategy that has caused widespread suffering among civilians.
International Response
Western allies have condemned the attacks, with several nations pledging additional air defence systems to help Ukraine protect its critical infrastructure. The timing of the assault has raised concerns about Moscow's intentions as temperatures begin to drop across the region.
Ukrainian officials have warned that such attacks constitute war crimes, deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure in violation of international law. The restoration of power, while temporary relief, does little to alleviate fears of what the coming winter months may bring.
