Justice Secretary David Lammy was heckled and booed by some members of the crowd as he addressed a vigil near the scene of the Manchester synagogue attack. Shouts of “shame on you” and “you have blood on your hands” were heard as he took the stage.
Police have arrested three more people in connection with the attack, bringing the total to six. All are held on suspicion of preparing acts of terrorism. The attacker, Jihad Al-Shamie, 35, wore a fake explosive device, according to counter-terrorism chief Laurence Taylor.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct is investigating whether police may have caused or contributed to the death of Adrian Daulby, 53, who was shot while barricading the synagogue doors. No non-police firearm was discharged, the watchdog said.
Melvin Cravitz, 66, a security guard, was also killed. He “courageously stopped the attacker from entering the building”, police said. Three other victims remain in hospital with serious injuries. Rabbi Daniel Walker said two of them “blocked the terrorist” with their bodies.
Al-Shamie was on police bail for alleged rape at the time of the attack and had other criminal convictions, but was not on the radar of counter-terrorism officers or MI5. Eyewitnesses reported him shouting: “This is what they get for killing our children.”
