Wegovy Weight Loss Pills: Expert Warning as They Roll Out Across UK

The new Wegovy weight-loss pill, containing semaglutide, is now available privately in the UK through high-street pharmacies and online providers. Medical specialists have issued guidance for anyone starting the treatment, which is the first pill of its kind approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). It is not yet available on the NHS.

Expert Warnings on Usage

Experts at treatment provider CheqUp have urged people to consult a clinician before switching from the injection to the tablet. Lisa Tookey, CEO of CheqUp, warned against using Wegovy as a quick way to shed a few pounds. "What matters most is setting expectations. This isn't a quick fix, and long-term success depends on pairing medication with lifestyle change and the right support," she said.

Titration and Risks

Tookey emphasized the importance of a gradual approach. "The biggest risks come from rushing dose increases, frequently stopping and starting, or using medication without proper clinical oversight. Consistency is key, and it works best as part of a structured health plan with ongoing check-ins," she added.

Switching from Injection to Pill

Superintendent pharmacist Aaron Arman confirmed the pill contains the same molecule as the injection. "It is the same medicine in a different form, with its own clinical profile and requirements," he said. He highlighted a key practical difference: the pill must be taken every morning on an empty stomach with up to 120ml of plain water, followed by a 30-minute wait before eating or drinking anything else. "If your mornings are unpredictable, this is worth thinking through carefully before switching," Arman advised.

Clinical Pathway for Switching

Arman noted that patients switching do not need to start from scratch. "There is a clinical pathway that maps where you are now to the right starting point on the Wegovy pill. Your clinician will look at your current dose and treatment history and work out the equivalent starting dose for the tablet. There will still be an adjustment period, but this is not the same as starting over," he explained.
