An inquest has opened into the death of 66-year-old Paula Owen, who died after taking a GLP-1 agonist weight loss medication. Senior Devon and Plymouth coroner Philip Spinney said the drug contributed to her death.
Inquest Details
Mrs Owen, a retail assistant originally from Liverpool, fell seriously ill at her home and was taken to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth. Despite medical intervention, her condition worsened and she died on July 23.
Coroner Philip Spinney formally opened the inquest, noting that the GLP-1 agonist medication was a contributing factor. The cause of death was recorded as 1(a) acute pancreatitis and 1(b) GLP-1 agonist.
Coroner's Statement
The coroner stated: "Mrs Owen became acutely unwell whilst at her home address. She was taken to Derriford Hospital and was admitted. Sadly her condition worsened despite medical intervention and she passed away. The medication that she was taking GLP-1 agonist for weight loss is deemed to have contributed to her death."
The inquest has been adjourned, with a full hearing scheduled at a later date.
