UKHSA Urges Teens to Get MenB Jab Before University

Health officials are urging teenagers born between September 1, 2007 and August 31, 2008 to check their vaccination status immediately, as many are missing a vital two-dose jab that protects against a potentially fatal strain of meningitis. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) issued an urgent alert on X on Tuesday, reminding school leavers to get their second dose of the MenB vaccine before starting university or further education this autumn.

Low Uptake Among Eligible Teens

Data from Well Pharmacy shows that fewer than 100,000 out of one million eligible students have received the free vaccine, meaning only one in ten has taken up the offer ahead of Freshers' Week. The free doses are available to anyone aged 17 or 18 in that birth range, as well as under-25s moving into residential accommodation or starting university for the first time.

Serious Risks and Recent Outbreak

The warning follows a UK meningitis B outbreak, including a cluster in Kent where 18-year-old student Juliette Kenny died within 24 hours of showing symptoms. Public health records tracked dozens of related cases in the region, prompting emergency on-campus vaccination and antibiotic clinics. Wendy Lee, Deputy Superintendent Pharmacist at Well Pharmacy, said: "MenB can become serious very quickly, and vaccination is a simple way to give students and parents peace of mind. The course requires two doses given at least four weeks apart, so we encourage students and parents to book now."

Symptoms and Availability

According to the NHS, MenB is a severe bacterial infection causing meningitis and septicaemia, and it is fatal in one in ten cases. Early symptoms include high fever, severe headache, confusion, stiff neck, and a non-fading rash. The Meningitis Research Foundation warns that these symptoms are easily confused with freshers' flu or a hangover, making urgent medical help critical. Free jabs are currently available at 435 Well Pharmacy branches nationwide, and NHS England urges all eligible young adults to book their two-dose appointments through official NHS online booking portals before term begins.
