Coronation Street legend Beverley Callard was treated by medics after losing consciousness while filming on the set of her new soap, Fair City. The 69-year-old actress, known for playing Rovers landlady Liz McDonald on the cobbled streets for nearly 30 years, became suddenly unwell on the Irish show's set and an ambulance was called.
Health scare on set
Callard, who revealed earlier this year she had been diagnosed with breast cancer and recently completed radiotherapy, took to Instagram this week to tell fans about the incident. She explained she was out cold for 10 minutes and had tests on her stomach, with results still pending.
She said: "I've been at work this week, filming the most amazing scenes. Really good, great scripts working with people who are so good, but good fun as well."
Recovery and waiting for answers
"And it was all going swimmingly, and then today, I've no idea what happened to me, but I was all ready to start a new scene with Emily, who plays my daughter, and we just sat there getting ready, about to run lines, and I lost consciousness for a few minutes, maybe 10 minutes, which was very odd."
"Because of protocol, they had to check me out and everything. An ambulance came. I desperately didn't want go to hospital."
Callard, who also starred on I'm A Celeb, recovered quickly and was sent home to rest, but remains unsure why she became unwell. She said: "I recovered and felt fine again but I can't explain what it was. I was boiling hot. I seemed to lose 10 minutes but I don't know why. I was checked out by the ambulance men and everything and they were happy to let me come home as long as I rested."
Support from fans
She added: "So I've got rest all weekend but now, I have to tell you, I feel a complete fraud because I'm home and I feel perfectly normal. The only thing that did happen was my blood pressure was through the roof but obviously I've not been right since the radiotherapy."
"But aside from that, I don't know what's going on. But I'm at the hospital again next week, so I'll probably know more, and I'm awaiting the results of these other tests and the biopsies they've taken from my stomach."
The actress was inundated with supportive messages from followers on social media. One wrote: "Let [the hospital] know what happened. Loss of consciousness for 10 minutes is something they need to know about. Please don't leave this until next week. Sending you love xx."
Another said: "I think if you rest, you can't help but feel like its beating you, but if you work, you're not resting enough! So all this is giving you even more anxiety. The thing is, at the end of the day, you know your body better than anyone else so only you can really hear and feel what its telling you. Do what feels right for you and take each day at a time. You'll get through this Bev xx."
