A viral cleaning hack claims that hard water stains on sinks and taps can be removed in minutes using just one common kitchen item: white distilled vinegar. The method, demonstrated by TikTok user Elena Grabovets, involves soaking folded kitchen roll in vinegar and wrapping it around affected areas.
Hard Water in the UK
According to reports, over 60% of the UK is classified as having hard or very hard water. This water contains high concentrations of naturally dissolved minerals such as calcium and magnesium. When water evaporates, these minerals are left behind, forming stubborn limescale stains on taps, sinks, and showers. Many common cleaning products struggle to remove these deposits, making it a constant battle for homeowners.
The Vinegar Hack
In her video, Elena Grabovets wrote: "Stop scrubbing your hard water stains! One of the easiest cleaning hacks I've tried." She demonstrated the process by folding a piece of kitchen roll several times to create a thicker pad, then drenching it in white distilled vinegar. She wrapped the soaked paper around the bathroom tap, focusing on the stained areas, and used a second sheet for the sink drain. After letting the vinegar-soaked paper sit for a few minutes—other sources suggest five to ten minutes—she removed it to reveal grime and limescale transferred onto the paper. Finally, she wiped the surfaces with a microfibre cloth, leaving them shining like new.

The comment section was filled with feedback. One viewer shared: "I do this. It works. It's also not bad on rust." Another added: "I just spray a cleaner, use a brush and gone...takes one min." A third commenter said: "Clorox mold and Mildew perfect for everything. No rinse needs." The hack has gained traction for its simplicity and effectiveness, offering a low-cost solution to a common household problem.
