Allerton Bakery Closes During Heatwave for Staff Safety

Suburbs Patisserie, a popular bakery on Allerton Road, has closed its doors during the ongoing heatwave. The decision, announced on Instagram, allows the team to work during cooler hours to prepare for the weekend reopening. The bakery asked customers to be patient with hospitality workers amid the high temperatures.

Heatwave Prompts Closure

The Met Office issued a 48-hour amber heat warning for the region, with temperatures expected to reach nearly 30°C on Wednesday and again on Thursday. The country is experiencing a heatwave that could break June records. Rail disruption has already affected commuters across Merseyside.

Suburbs Patisserie will remain closed until Friday, June 26, when the warning ends. A post on Instagram stated: "Due to the heatwave, we've decided to close to the public until Friday. This will allow our team to work during cooler hours to get stocks ready for the weekend. Please be extra kind and patient with your hospitality workers while the temperature is so high. Many thanks for your understanding."

Popular Bakery Opened in 2025

Owners Darren and Rebecca Roper opened Suburbs Patisserie in February 2025, offering French-inspired patisserie with a Mediterranean twist. The bakery quickly became a hit, with queues regularly stretching down the street. Standout items include fruit tarts, flaky pastries, croissants, cakes, and brunch sandwiches.

Head baker Darren makes all laminated pastries in-house using the finest ingredients. The bakery offers vegan options daily and avoids gelatine. Darren grew up in Woolton, while Rebecca moved to Liverpool from Kent for university. The couple met in a club, travelled the world, and decided to bring their love of patisserie to Liverpool.

Darren previously told the ECHO: "We knew there would be a good audience in Allerton. There's not a huge amount of vegetarian or vegan options so it's great to fill that gap. When we found this venue, we knew it was correct."
