Toasted Sandwiches Named Britain's Favourite Comfort Food in Ginsters Survey
Toasted Sandwiches Top Comfort Food in Ginsters Survey

A survey by Ginsters has found that toasted sandwiches are Britain's favourite comfort food, with 31% of respondents naming them their ultimate feel-good meal. The research, which polled 2,000 UK adults, highlights a resurgence of the humble toaster as consumers grow weary of complex kitchen gadgets.

Toaster Renaissance Amid Appliance Fatigue

The data reveals that Brits are experiencing 'appliance anxiety,' with many finding modern devices difficult to clean, confusing to use, and too bulky. Nearly a third (28%) now actively prefer simpler appliances for fuss-free meal prep. One in five (22%) own a kitchen appliance they haven't used in over a year, while 13% have never used one of their gadgets. Furthermore, 14% report that kitchen appliances have overflowed into other rooms due to lack of counter space.

Despite the trend toward air fryers and multi-cookers, the toaster is reclaiming its place. Over a third (35%) of respondents say they use their toaster more frequently than a year ago, and 81% of Brits own one, using it an average of four times per week. Cheese on toast tops the nation's favourite toaster recipes at 45%, followed by beans on toast (35%), buttered toast (33%), toasted sandwiches (31%), and crumpets (30%).

Lunchtime Crisis and Quick Meal Solutions

The survey also exposes a lunchtime crisis: 33% of Brits say they need something quick for a typical weekday lunch, and 20% skip the meal entirely. Clean-up is the biggest frustration, with 60% having less than 10 minutes to prepare lunch. Consequently, 22% see the toaster as the easiest route to a quick hot meal.

In response, Ginsters has launched the Ginsters Pastry Toastie, a pastry filled with oozy melted cheese and 100% British meat, available in Smoked Ham & Cheddar, Tomato, Basil & Mozzarella, and Chicken Pesto & Mozzarella. It cooks in under four minutes with no mess. Sarah Babb of Ginsters said: 'The British public has spoken and toasters are still firmly on the kitchen counter. It wins on ease, speed and everyday brilliance, so we wanted to give it the lunchtime moment it deserves.' The product retails at £2.50 at major retailers.
