Oven chips can be transformed into a tastier dish with just one ingredient added after cooking, according to Mimi Morley, Senior Recipe Development Manager at HelloFresh. She recommends sprinkling a spice bag seasoning over the chips once they come out of the oven to significantly enhance their flavor.
The Simple Method
Morley, who manages recipe development for HelloFresh, shared her tip on social media, where the company has thousands of followers. She said: "I just love a spice bag, so this is always going to be my answer! Even if you don't have the other ingredients of a great spice bag (peppers, onions, fried chicken etc), sprinkling a spice bag seasoning on your chips at the end will elevate them so high you won't go back!"
The method is straightforward: after baking the frozen chips according to package instructions, immediately dust them with a spice blend while they are still hot. The residual heat helps the seasoning adhere and release its essential oils.
Why Spices Make a Difference
Adding spices introduces complexity, warmth, and depth that plain salt cannot achieve. Some cooks recommend coating chips in a little oil before adding the spice mix, as oil acts as an adhesive. However, many frozen chips already contain oil, so baking first and seasoning after removal from the oven works well.
Morley's tip is part of a broader trend of simple kitchen hacks. Previously, a chef warned that a common mistake can ruin chips. This spice method offers an easy way to elevate a basic frozen food into a flavorful side dish.
Practical Application
To try this at home, prepare oven chips as usual. Once cooked, transfer them to a bowl, sprinkle with your preferred spice bag seasoning (available at many supermarkets or online), and toss to coat. Serve immediately for best results.
The technique is quick, effective, and requires no additional ingredients beyond the spice mix. It can transform bland chips into a genuinely delicious accompaniment to meals.
