MSP praises Nationwide Livingston for vital in-person banking

Scottish Labour MSP Jenny Young has praised Nationwide Livingston for “showing why in-person banking in the community is vital” after a recent visit to the branch. Young was invited by Nationwide Retail Branch Manager James Anderson to learn more about the services it provides to customers and the local community.

Initiatives highlighted during the visit

During the visit, Young learned about specific initiatives the branch has taken on, including hosting Dementia Clinics, offering ‘Money Lessons’ to children in local schools, and being a safe space for victims of domestic abuse. Nationwide Building Society recently pledged to keep all of its 696 UK branches open until at least 2030.

MSP's comments on community impact

Commenting, the Lothians West MSP said: “I want to thank James and his team for welcoming me to the branch and for giving me a really clear insight into what the branch is doing for people in the local community. The reality is that while a lot of people are happy to do their banking online nowadays, there are still so many people who want to be able to speak with someone face to face about their queries or concerns. I commend James and his team for thinking about how they can be accessible as possible and for all the ways they are trying to serve the people of Livingston – they are really showing why in-person banking in the community is vital. They are offering support and advice to people who may be struggling with dementia, the building is a safe space for victims of domestic abuse, and I’m really impressed with their initiative offering money lessons to school pupils. These services are not just for customers and Nationwide members, they are for anyone in the Livingston area and I would encourage anyone who could benefit from them to get involved.”

Branch manager's perspective

James Anderson, Livingston Branch Manager at Nationwide, added: “It was a pleasure to welcome Jenny Young MSP to the branch and show her the important role we play on the high street. Having a local presence means customers can choose how they bank, while also giving us the opportunity to support the wider community. From day-to-day banking through to dementia clinics and digital lessons, our branches make a positive difference locally - it was fantastic for Jenny to see that impact first-hand.”
