She recommends a simple, effective hack: placing a pillowcase in the freezer for about 20 minutes before bed. 'Your head and neck are major heat-loss zones, so cooling them can make falling asleep much easier,' says Artis. This provides an instant cooling sensation without dampness later.
Why Freezing Your Pillowcase Works
The pillowcase trick targets the head and neck, which are key areas for heat release. By cooling these zones, the body can lower its core temperature more efficiently, promoting sleep. Another similar hack is freezing a pair of socks for 30 minutes before bed. 'Your feet are packed with blood vessels close to the skin's surface, making them one of the quickest places for your body to release heat,' Artis adds. The gentle cooling effect can help trigger sleep mode.
Heatwave Hacks That Don't Work
Not all popular hacks are effective. Taking a freezing cold shower before bed can backfire, as it may trigger the body to conserve heat, leaving you warmer afterwards. A lukewarm shower is more effective because it allows body temperature to fall naturally. Similarly, opening windows during the hottest parts of the day can make your home unbearably hot. Instead, only ventilate early in the morning and late at night.

Beyond freezer tricks, consider using lightweight, breathable bedding and keeping curtains closed during the day to block out heat. Staying hydrated and avoiding heavy meals before bed can also help.
