During warmer months, few fruits rival the refreshing taste of juicy watermelon. Packed with vitamins A and C, antioxidants, and high water content, watermelon is essential for hydration during heatwaves. According to Healthline, adequate hydration supports body temperature regulation, organ function, nutrient delivery, and alertness. Eating high-water-content foods like watermelon helps the body function properly.
Why Cutting Technique Matters
Despite its popularity, many people waste watermelon due to improper cutting. The technique used significantly impacts how much fruit is discarded. Simple adjustments can transform a whole watermelon into convenient, bite-sized portions while maximizing every slice.
Two Pro Techniques from @ItalyPaulJosephine
Content creator @ItalyPaulJosephine shared two professional cutting methods on YouTube Shorts. For the first technique, Paul divided a watermelon in half using a butcher knife on a chopping board. He then sliced one half into nine large square portions by cutting horizontally and vertically twice. He inserted skewers into the pieces and set them aside. For even less waste, the rind can be removed before inserting skewers. Cutting flesh into squares rather than triangles reduces waste.
For the second technique, Paul sliced the remaining half into four large portions, then cut through them like a cake to produce easy-to-eat triangular pieces. Throughout both methods, the watermelon flesh faced downward on the chopping board, not the rind.
Viewer Reactions
Viewers praised Paul's methods. One commented: "Now that's pretty neat. Where do I get a knife like that? It cuts like butter." Another wrote: "SOO COOL." A third remarked: "Good idea." However, one viewer expressed disapproval: "Dirty watermelon. Only the rind should ever come in contact with the cutting board." Paul replied: "It's totally clean! This chopping board is only used for cutting fruit. I washed it and dried it in a sunny room. I also washed the whole watermelon under running water with a pinch of salt and dried it with a clean dishcloth." Another viewer questioned the knife choice: "Why does everyone always use a butcher knife. It's the wrong knife to cut watermelon, yet everyone uses the wrong knife. Zero cutting skills there. None whatsoever." A fellow viewer responded: "Personally, I find the butcher knife more convenient and more entertaining to use."
