A beloved waterpark that had been a top destination for countless families since it opened in the 1990s was permanently shut down and demolished, leaving no trace. The UK may not be the first destination that comes to mind for waterparks, given its notoriously dreary climate, but Aqua Splash in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, was a firm favourite for many.
Aqua Splash: A Cherished Destination
Located less than an hour from London, Aqua Splash was widely cherished for its rides, slides, and pools. The indoor waterpark featured slides protruding from the building and winding around its exterior, creating a thrilling spectacle even before visitors entered.
Despite its popularity, the waterpark began to show signs of neglect over the years. Grime in changing rooms and on floors became common complaints. The attraction desperately needed renovation, but that day never came.
Closure and Demolition
Aqua Splash shut its doors for the final time in 2013, and the site was demolished in 2014. The Jarman Park venue now hosts Planet Ice Hemel Hempstead ice rink and XC extreme sports centre, which features an indoor skatepark and climbing walls.
The waterpark's name endures through nostalgic memories. An Instagram account, Hemel Images, shared a Reel with photos of Aqua Splash in its prime, captioned: 'POV: Aquasplash was your childhood.' The account paid tribute to the 'happy memories' and lasting legacy.
Community Memories
In the comments, enthusiasts shared their memories. One joked: 'Guaranteed athletes foot every visit, wouldn't change it for the world.' Another recalled: 'I can still smell and taste it!' A third wrote: 'Why is there nowhere similar that place was like heaven to me at 8/9.'
Others noted: 'I work at the cineworld up at Jarmans. And in a little room under one of the screens there is still a boat from the old slides.' A former lifeguard said: 'I was a lifeguard in there, what a job aha.' One simply added: 'This place was the best.'
Aqua Splash may be gone, but it remains a cherished memory for many who enjoyed its slides, lazy river, and pools.
