Memorable mishaps include a failed attempt at crème patisserie after failing to smell the milk before use, and a 2016 grilled layered pancake dish that caused the mixer to explode, leaking motor oil into the batter. The cost of ingredients has also been a challenge, with items like matcha tea costing over £10 for a small jar, leading to a cake that tasted 'predominantly of freshly-cut grass'.
Despite the drawbacks, the baker has found joy in testing their skills and gaining empathy for the contestants. They admitted to previously judging bakers on screen but realised the gaps in their own knowledge after choking on a phone call audition for the show when asked how to make a sourdough starter. This year, with record viewing numbers during the pandemic, the challenge has provided comfort and a sense of purpose.
