Blade Runner, widely regarded as one of the greatest science fiction films of all time, will be broadcast on BBC Two this Sunday at 10pm. The film will also be available to stream on BBC iPlayer for a limited time afterward.
Plot and Cast
Directed by Ridley Scott and based on Philip K. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, the film is set in a dystopian 2019 Los Angeles. It follows former police officer Rick Deckard, played by Harrison Ford, as he hunts a group of fugitive replicants—advanced robots nearly indistinguishable from humans. The neo-noir narrative explores themes of identity and humanity, with Deckard questioning whether he himself might be a replicant.
Critical Reception and Legacy
Upon its release in 1982, Blade Runner received mixed reviews and underperformed at the American box office. However, it gained a cult following and is now considered a foundational text of the cyberpunk genre, influencing countless films, video games, and anime. According to critics, it has become "one of the greatest science fiction films ever made."
Thirty-five years later, director Denis Villeneuve released a sequel, Blade Runner 2049, which earned an Oscar nomination. The sequel stars Ford reprising his role alongside Ryan Gosling and is widely considered as good as, if not better than, the original.
