Personal Journeys Continue
On the personal front, Humphrey and Martha will be navigating married life as they search for a new home together. Meanwhile, Humphrey faces an impossible decision that could potentially change the lives of everyone at the police station forever.
For ardent fans, it's worth remembering that Humphrey originally appeared on Death In Paradise from 2014 to 2017. During his time on Saint Marie, he reconnected with Martha, an acquaintance from back home, after divorcing his first wife. He ultimately left the island to be with her, making way for Ardal O'Hanlon's DI Jack Mooney to take his place.
Building on a Successful Christmas Special
Beyond Paradise most recently aired a special festive episode during Christmas 2025, which left many viewers deeply moved. The installment followed Humphrey and the team as they tried to identify a man with dementia who arrived at the police station clutching a photograph of Humphrey, claiming to know him.
The BBC's synopsis described the emotional storyline: 'An elderly man living with dementia turns up on the police station steps, clutching only a photograph of Humphrey. He's searching for his sister, Louise, and believes that Humphrey is his last hope. But with precious few clues to her whereabouts, the team must work against the clock to unravel the mysteries of his past.'
The episode also featured a break-in at a local wine bar where the team had celebrated their Christmas party just hours before, and an unusual emergency involving Kelby being called to help a man trapped inside a snowman suit after his head was glued on as a prank.
Viewer Reactions and Critical Acclaim
The Christmas special generated significant emotional responses from viewers, with many taking to social media to express their feelings. One viewer wrote: 'What have you done to me, I am a 49 year old man and I'm crying my eyes out, that is how you do a Christmas Episode, emotional, funny, heart, Selwyn!! Absolutely fantastic and Ade Edmondson is a National Treasure.'
Another commented: 'Crying ugly tears at the Beyond Paradise Christmas special. So beautiful, poignant & emotional. I can't handle it.' Others praised the quality of the show, with one fan stating: 'Beyond Paradise doesn't get the credit it deserves. Brilliantly written, brilliantly cast, brilliantly acted.'
Some viewers even questioned why the special wasn't scheduled for Christmas Day itself, with one asking: 'Why didn't the BBC schedule this for Christmas evening rather than Eastenders, Mrs Browns Boys and yet even more bloody celebrities in programmes?'
Cast Reflections
Speaking about the Christmas special, actor Kris Marshall shared his thoughts with the BBC: 'It's such a personal story for Humphrey. A man turns up on his doorstep with a picture and we're not sure why, but it soon becomes a deeply touching story. I find it becomes especially personal because of the eventual reason as to why he has Humphrey's photograph – it's a very Christmassy story that warms the cockles.'
Beyond Paradise continues to air on BBC One and iPlayer, with series four promising to deliver more of the charming mysteries and heartfelt character moments that have made the show a success since its debut in 2023.
