Netflix has quietly dropped a new gritty crime drama, Bandi, which has already been hailed as a 'masterpiece' and the 'best series of the year' by fans. The eight-part French-language series, now available with an English dub, is set on the Caribbean island of Martinique, not far from Guadeloupe where the BBC's Death in Paradise is filmed.
The show follows the LaFleur family, where 11 siblings become orphans after their mother's sudden death. Kingsley (Rodney Dijon) turns to theft to keep the family together, while his younger brother Kylan (Djody Grimeau) operates as a powerful drug lord under the alias Milord, also determined to protect his loved ones.
Critics and viewers have compared Bandi to a crossover between Death in Paradise and Shameless, due to its Caribbean backdrop and the siblings' desperate measures to survive, whether legal or not. Fans have taken to social media, with one writing, 'I smoked it all in one go', and another asking, 'We’re agreed there’ll be a season two, right?'
On IMDb, a fan described it as the 'best series of the year', praising its 'perfect balance between action and storytelling'. Despite the buzz, Netflix has not yet confirmed a second series.
