The acclaimed 2002 crime epic City of God, which holds a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, has arrived on Amazon Prime Video. The film is widely recognised for its dynamic visual style, sharp editing and compelling narrative.
A Story of Crime and Survival in Rio
The film charts the brutal rise of organised crime in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro from the late 1960s through to the early 1980s, seen through the eyes of Rocket (Alexandre Rodrigues), a young aspiring photographer attempting to navigate the turbulent environment where he grew up.
City of God follows Rocket's struggle to make an honest living, while simultaneously showing a starkly different path: that of Li'l Zé (Leandro Firmino), his childhood acquaintance who gradually transforms into the neighbourhood's most vicious drug kingpin.
Authentic Cast and Critical Praise
The film, co-directed by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund, recruited its principal cast directly from actual Rio favelas, delivering a raw, authentic quality to the performances. It is renowned for its rapid-fire, episodic storytelling structure, featuring Scorsese-esque quick cuts and voiceovers that will feel familiar to admirers of classic Hollywood crime dramas.
City of God received four Academy Award nominations, including Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay, and is regularly listed amongst the finest action and international films ever made. On Rotten Tomatoes, critics heaped praise on numerous aspects of the film, particularly the cast's authenticity.
One reviewer wrote: "The constant rat-a-tat-tat of gunfire, the sun-scorched grime, the extraordinary performances from a cast of mostly non-professional actors, it all drops you squarely into a world most of us will never know and probably not fully recover from seeing."
They added: "That it still shocks and dismays while leaving a sliver of hope is the mark of genuinely great filmmaking. If you haven't seen it, stop what you're doing and add this to your queue."
Another added: "It is impossible to not come away mesmerized and haunted by the story and the powerful portrayal of a childhood deformed by an unforgiving and crime-prone environment and the attempt to rise to power and fortune on the one side and on the other to legitimacy and recognition."
A third described it as "nothing short of a masterpiece of world cinema - relentless, brutal, and heartbreakingly human."
Sequel Series and Streaming Availability
In August 2024, HBO launched a follow-up to City of God - a series entitled City of God: The Fight Rages On, set two decades after the events of the original film. It follows Rocket (with Alexandre Rodrigues reprising his role) as an adult, now working as a professional photojournalist chronicling a fresh wave of violence involving drug dealers, emerging local militias, and state police.
City of God is currently available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
