King Charles has sent his "warmest congratulations" to US President Donald Trump and the American people in a message marking the 250th anniversary of America's independence from Britain. He called it "a truly historic milestone and a moment of great celebration for Americans everywhere."
King and Queen's Visit to the US
Charles added that he and the Queen were "proud, and honoured, to be able to celebrate this special anniversary during our visit to the United States in April." The King and Queen carried out a four-day trip to the US earlier this year to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence. Their schedule ranged from taking tea at the White House with Mr Trump and his wife Melania, a white-tie banquet in their honour, a historic address to Congress, and a bunting-decked street party in rural Virginia.
Evolution of UK-US Relations
In his message, the King described the story of the relationship between the two nations as "one of extraordinary evolution, from overcoming conflict to forging one of the closest and most productive alliances the world has seen." He highlighted that "across defence and security, trade and investment, science, research, education, culture and the arts, the ties between the United Kingdom and the United States are unique and far-reaching."
Shared Values and Future Outlook
Charles said, "Through centuries of shared challenge and achievement, our nations have built a relationship founded on friendship, trust and a belief in liberty, the rule of law and the dignity of all people." He expressed confidence that the bond will continue: "As we look ahead to the next 250 years, I have no doubt we will continue to defend our shared values." The King also noted a "shared responsibility to protect the natural world" and that "the connection between our peoples is one that I trust will only grow stronger with time." The message ended with "Charles R."
Last September, Mr Trump came to the UK for a historic second state visit. The King's message was posted online and addressed to "Dear Mr President."
