TV host Jeremy Vine has revealed Princess Kate's one-word reaction after she and her three children were booed by anti-monarchy protesters during Trooping the Colour. The Princess of Wales was not amused as she faced jeers from the crowd while traveling in a carriage from the event to Buckingham Palace on Saturday.
The Incident at Trooping the Colour
Kate traveled with Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 11, and eight-year-old Prince Louis as anti-monarchists shouted “Not my King!” and booed loudly. The children's smiles faltered, with George looking uncomfortable, while Kate maintained a stern composure. Discussing the moment on The Jeremy Vine Show, the presenter said Kate gave the protesters “evils.”
Panel Reactions
Panellist Lara Brown described Kate as looking “terrifying” while “giving a dirty look.” Jeremy interjected: “She should have smiled. The Queen would have smiled.” Lara defended Kate, saying: “The difficulty is this is the big parade for the King's birthday. Her husband William is on horseback. He's not even in the carriage. I can imagine how angry you would feel driving along with three young children, who have never made any political statements, haven't said what they think about the monarchy being booed by the crowd with no idea why. I think that is why she looks so cross.”
Public Debate
Former Labour councillor Sebastien Salek noted that the monarchy still enjoys widespread support. The show polled its X account followers, asking: “Is it OK to boo at Royal events? The Princess of Wales and her three children were among those targeted by protestors at the Trooping the Colour ceremony on Saturday. Is that fair game? Or is it disrespectful with kids there?”
Reactions varied: one follower wrote, “Why would you go all the way to London and the Trooping of the Colour ceremony just to boo and shout, are these the same pro pal, anti British, banner waving haters of our history, traditions and culture?” Another argued: “Of course it is - it just shows a lack of class.” A third said: “The Institution was booed, not the children!” while another added: “Hmm isn't there a democracy & something called free speech.”
A video of the moment went viral on social media, with fans praising Kate's strength during the difficult interaction.
