Duchess Sophie has sparked widespread praise from royal fans after becoming the first member of the Royal Family to visit the Ecréhous, a group of uninhabited islands north of Jersey. During her two-day visit to the Channel Islands, she explored sustainable farming and fishing practices and engaged with local communities.
Historic Visit to the Ecréhous
On Tuesday, the Duchess of Edinburgh visited the Ecréhous reef, a remote area rarely accessed by royals. According to the Bailiff's Office, she met local farmers, producers, environmental leaders, and children learning about Jersey's commitment to sustainable food production and stewardship of the natural environment. This marked a significant royal first for the island.
Engagement with Farming and Fishing Sectors
Sophie spent time at Trinity Manor Farm, interacting with cows and learning about sustainable agriculture. She also visited fishing communities to understand their efforts in preserving marine ecosystems. The visit highlighted Jersey's dedication to educating young people about the origins of their food.
Support for Armed Forces and Sight Impairment Charity
On the second day, the duchess met with members of the island's Reserve Forces on Reserves Day as part of Armed Forces Week. The visit concluded at EYECAN Jersey, a charity supporting islanders with sight impairment. She joined celebrations for the charity's 140th anniversary, met clients and volunteers, participated in a white cane exercise, and observed how Meta smart glasses assist visually impaired individuals in navigating daily life.
NSPCC Reception and Public Reaction
Later, Sophie attended a reception for the NSPCC, of which she is patron. Fans took to social media to express their admiration. One user on X said: 'Very nice to see her working with such an important cause in Jersey.' Another added: 'Fantastic to see Jersey’s farming, fishing, and community sectors getting the recognition they deserve. A truly memorable royal visit for the Island!' A third commented: 'Sophie is the best,' while a fourth noted: 'She always has such a pretty, relaxed look about her as she attends to these events with effortless charm.'
