Richard Madeley has revealed why he won't be appearing on Good Morning Britain full-time, saying he has "no ambition left" and wouldn't take on the role previously held by Piers Morgan.
The 70-year-old broadcaster, best known for fronting This Morning alongside his wife Judy Finnigan, made the comments while appearing as a guest on Vanessa Feltz's At Home with Vanessa podcast.
'No Ambition Left'
Asked by Feltz whether he had any ambitions left and if he would jump at the chance to host a show such as Strictly Come Dancing, Madeley said he continues to work as a broadcaster for the "fun" of it but has no plans to work more than he already does.
"They're never going to ask me do that [Strictly], but if they did, of course I would because it would be a hoot, what a laugh," he shared. "I mean, it's like going to a party every week. But, to answer the first part of your question, no I don't have any ambition left at all," he admitted.
Career Arc 'Behind Me'
"I feel, and I've said this many times in the last few years, I feel like my career arc is behind me."
Reflecting on how far he had come, Madeley likened his career path to having "got to the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge", before coming down to "wander around the harbour, enjoying the scenery and sunshine".
He went on to say he is happy with the varied shifts he works on Good Morning Britain, but admitted he wouldn't want to become a full-time presenter.
'I Like a Smorgasbord'
"That's plenty," he said as he broke down his shift pattern. "And to be honest, if they came to me and said, 'Would you do it on the same level Piers Morgan used to do it? I would say, 'No I can't'."
Madeley said this is because he has "other stuff happening", which has included recently fronting a documentary about El Salvador's mega prison.
"You need time away to do that," he explained. "I like a smorgasbord, GMB, I do just enough for me to keep my toe in the water in terms of life, but no, I don't have ambition. I'm not aiming to hit targets or establish a reputation because whatever my reputation is, it's established, it's not going to change now."
Meanwhile, while on hosting duties on Wednesday (August 26), Madeley choked up as he paid tribute to the late Dolly Parton, whose death was announced in a video at her request on Tuesday (August 25). According to her team, the 80-year-old music legend died after a brief battle with cancer that she had been battling privately.
