Prime Video has confirmed that Dave Bautista will replace Ryan Hurst as Kratos in the live-action God of War series, following an on-set injury sustained by Hurst in June 2026.
Hurst, known for his role in The Walking Dead, was announced as Kratos in January 2026. He had previously voiced and provided motion capture for Thor in the 2022 game God of War Ragnarok. After his injury during filming, studio bosses decided to recast the role.
Dave Bautista takes over as Kratos
Bautista, 57, known for his roles in Guardians of the Galaxy, the recent Dune adaptations, Blade Runner 2049, and the James Bond film Spectre, is now listed as the lead character by Prime Video.
The casting has drawn mixed reactions from fans, with some praising the decision. One Reddit user wrote: “Look, I feel really bad for Ryan Hurst. This was an awesome role to land, and from the last pic he posted, he put in the work.”
Another said: “Still really bummed about Hurst but in all honesty, couldn't have asked for a better replacement in Bautista. He fits the look/voice so perfectly.”
Fans react with humour and doubt
Some fans made jokes referencing Bautista’s wrestling career, with one saying: “He better hit the spinebuster and Batista bomb on Thor!” Another added: “Kratos gonna get Odin with the steel chair.”
However, not all reactions were positive. One fan wrote: “I hope he does Kratos justice, i really really hope he does.” Another said: “Am I the only one who thinks this is not a good choice at all? This is not even disrespect to Bautista I think he’s a great actor. I just don’t see this as a good fit for him.”
A reply echoed the sentiment: “Same, outside of the body, I don’t see the face, voice, mannerisms as remotely Kratos. Ryan was a better cast I feel and they should’ve waited instead of moving things along because the kid’ll age.”
