Mum Regrets Naming Twins After TV Characters, Wants to Change Them
Mum Regrets Naming Twins After TV Characters

A mother has expressed regret over naming her twins after discovering that the names she chose are also the monikers of two popular children's television characters. She is now considering changing them.

The Dilemma

Choosing a single baby name can be challenging, but selecting names for twins adds an extra layer of complexity. Parents often seek names that complement each other, whether they match, rhyme, start with the same letter, or follow a theme. However, one mother on social media found herself in an unfortunate situation where she unintentionally linked her twins' names together, despite her efforts to keep them distinct.

Unintentional Connection

The mother wanted her twins to have names that were not too similar. She believed she had found the perfect pairing when she chose Charlie for her son and Lola for her daughter. However, after their birth, she realized that Charlie and Lola is the title of a popular children's picture book series by Lauren Child, featuring a brother and sister with the same names. The series was also adapted into a television show that aired on CBeebies from 2005 to 2008.

Awkward Reactions

Whenever she introduces her children, people give her awkward reactions regarding the names. The mother now feels she has made a mistake and is contemplating changing them. She wrote on NetMums: "I needed some advice, I have twins whom I named Charlie (boy) and Lola. Don't get me wrong I love both the names but I feel like I made the wrong decision and I always get awkward reactions when people ask. I had doubts originally when I first had them as I had been on Tramadol for days and felt like I may have rushed the decision."

Possible Change

She is due to register the babies soon and feels pressure to make a decision. If she changes a name, it will be from Lola to Lila, altering only one letter to avoid confusion. She worries about her children being teased because of the TV show. Her partner thinks she is being ridiculous, but she spends more time with other parents and children and dreads their reactions.

Community Support

Fellow users reassured her that she can choose any names and should not worry about others' opinions. One person commented: "I personally think Lola is much nicer than Lila... and more unique too, I seem to see a lot of Layla and Lila but haven't seen a Lola, I think it's lovely." Another wrote: "It shouldn't really matter why you named your children what you did, whether it's linked to a TV programme, book or song title or it just jumped out at you as a name you loved, that's totally your business." A third added: "They're all great names, maybe refer to them as Lola and Charlie? But it's definitely not too late to change your daughter's if you prefer Lila. Congratulations!"
