Placebo Returns with Acoustic Set for Teenage Cancer Trust at Royal Albert Hall
Placebo's Acoustic Return for Teenage Cancer Trust Gig

Rock band Placebo made a triumphant return to the stage on Saturday, delivering a captivating performance for a noble cause. The event, part of Robert Smith's emotionally charged Teenage Cancer Trust gig at the Royal Albert Hall, saw Placebo supporting fellow alternative rockers Garbage in a night filled with nostalgia and charity.

A Rare and Intimate Acoustic Set

Placebo, who last toured two years ago with their Never Let Me Go Tour, took to the stage with a sense of excitement and nervousness. Lead singer Brian Molko, 53, and bandmate Stefan Olsdal, 51, appeared without the moustache Brian had sported in recent years, harking back to their 1990s aesthetic. Brian humorously admitted, 'We haven't toured in two years. We're s***ting it,' visibly moved by the rapturous applause from the audience.

Instead of playing expected hits, the duo treated fans to a magical acoustic set featuring rarely performed tracks. They opened with a cover of Sinead O'Connor's 'Jackie,' followed by 'Special Needs' from their fourth studio album, Sleeping With Ghosts. While fan favourites like 'Nancy Boy' and 'Teenage Angst' were skipped, they included a beautifully slow rendition of 'Beautiful James' from their latest album, Never Let Me Go. The set closed with 'Centrefolds,' as lights from a giant disco ball illuminated the iconic venue.

Celebrating 30 Years with New Album and Tour

This year marks a significant milestone for Placebo, as they celebrate 30 years since the release of their self-titled debut album. To commemorate this, they have announced a new album, Placebo Re:Created, set for release on June 19. This project is described as a 'director's cut' of their 1996 debut, reworked to reflect how the songs have evolved over three decades of live performances.

The band explained that Placebo Re:Created aims to 'drag the album into the 21st century sonically' while preserving the jagged, provocative energy of the original. It includes all ten songs from the debut plus two bonus tracks from that era, serving as 'a celebration of where we began' and 'a meeting point between who we were then and who we are now.'

Accompanying the album is a 30th anniversary European tour, kicking off in Portugal on September 28 and spanning 36 dates across Europe, including stops in the UK. The tour will feature songs from their first two albums, many of which have not been performed live for over 20 years.

Garbage's Powerful Performance

Following Placebo's set, Garbage took the stage, opening with the title track from their latest album, Let All That We Imagine Be the Light. Frontwoman Shirley Manson, who noted she and Placebo had 'grown up together' on the festival circuit since the 1990s, proved her declaration: 'I will always and forever rock HARDER than most.'

Despite battling laryngitis in recent weeks, Manson delivered note-perfect vocals, performing hits like 'Fix Me Now' and 'I Think I'm Paranoid.' The band paid tribute to Robert Smith with a beautiful cover of The Cure's 'Lovesong,' adding to the emotional depth of the evening.

Legacy and Impact

Placebo emerged during the height of Britpop but stood apart by exploring themes of androgyny, queerness, addiction, and alienation with raw candour. Their debut album quickly became a cult favourite, propelled by breakthrough singles like 'Nancy Boy' and '36 Degrees.' Over three decades, they have consistently defied categorization, maintaining their status as musical outliers.

The Teenage Cancer Trust concert not only showcased Placebo's enduring appeal but also highlighted their commitment to charitable causes. Fans can pre-order Placebo Re:Created in various formats, including CD, cassette, and vinyl editions, with proceeds supporting the trust's vital work.

As Placebo prepares for their upcoming tour, this performance at the Royal Albert Hall serves as a poignant reminder of their lasting influence and the power of music to bring people together for a good cause.
