Bluey Coins Spark Nationwide Frenzy in Australia

The Royal Australian Mint has unveiled a special series of $1 coins featuring the beloved children's character Bluey, sparking a nationwide frenzy. The coins, which go on sale from Thursday 6 June, are expected to be in high demand, with a ballot set up ahead of the release.

Three designs will be available: one featuring Bluey herself, another with the Heeler family, and a third depicting the Grannies. Each coin also includes the iconic Heeler home, which featured prominently in the show's blockbuster special, The Sign. Fans can purchase individual coins or a three-coin set through the mint's online shop, contact centre, or participating distributors.

Kate O'Connor, BBC Studios' director of brands and licensing for Australia and New Zealand, said: 'These fun and colourful coins encapsulate the playful essence of the beloved TV series, making them a timeless treasure for fans and collectors alike.'

The ABC show has become a global phenomenon since its launch in 2018, accounting for nearly one-third of all TV views on Disney+ and becoming the second-most streamed show on any platform last year. The franchise is now worth an estimated $2 billion, with two Logie awards, an Emmy, and a Peabody award to its name.

Despite its success, some remain unaware of Bluey's popularity. Last month, a Las Vegas restaurant had to apologise after its themed event was overwhelmed by hundreds of families, with children crying due to poorly organised activities. A staffer admitted they had expected only a handful of families, not 'the entire city'.
