A semi-detached house in Treharris, South Wales, has been transformed into what is being called Britain's most colourful home. Wyndham Stokes, 59, who was born in the house and has lived there his entire life, commissioned a local mural artist to redesign the front of his once plain yellow property.
Nature-inspired mural completed in five days
The mural, designed and painted by Matt Dey over five days, features UK wildlife including a robin, a blue tit, and a rabbit. Wyndham's only specific request was the inclusion of a red kite in the right-hand corners of the design. Dey used a spray can with acrylic paint to create the artwork.
Dey, 51, began designing murals after the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite being afraid of heights, he completed the project, noting that the entire village watched as he worked. He said: "It was like painting in a gold fish bowl! There was no room for error as everyone can see you. The whole village was looking, had to be spot on! I am terrified of heights - so that was something I had to try and get over pretty quickly!"
Community reaction and future plans
Wyndham expressed his delight, saying: "I really am happy with it! I sit in the garden, look at it and think what more can I wish for? It's very pleasing to the eye and enjoyable to look at. It's the little things that bring joy. Everyone was coming up to watch Matt whilst he was painting! Now I get cars coming up just to come see it for themselves. He is very talented."
The father-of-one said he was inspired to transform his home because he loves nature and is "a little different." He contacted Dey after seeing his designs online and proposed a loose nature theme. Dey, who recently appeared at Upfest—Europe's largest street art festival held biannually in Bristol—has now been asked to paint the entire house. Wyndham added: "It is even going to have a pine marten on it! How exciting." The full house mural is expected to be finished by the end of summer.
