David Beckham has been praised by viewers for calling out his wife Victoria's claim of a “working-class upbringing” in his new Netflix documentary series. The four-part series, released on Wednesday (4 October), tracks the former Manchester United star’s rise to fame and his relationship with the Spice Girls singer.
In a scene that has gone viral, Victoria tells an interviewer: “We’re very, very working class.” David then pops his head around a doorframe and interjects: “Be honest.” When Victoria insists she is being honest, he asks: “What car did your dad drive you to school in?” After several attempts to avoid the question, Victoria admits: “OK, in the Eighties, my dad had a Rolls-Royce.” David responds with a satisfied “Thank you” before disappearing.
The exchange has delighted viewers, with one writing on social media: “Fair play to Beckham for keeping it 100.” However, others criticised Victoria for claiming working-class status despite her father owning a luxury car, which currently starts at £252,000. One person wrote: “Rich people pretending to be working class are awful.”
The documentary also covers the highs and lows of the couple’s 24-year marriage, including the aftermath of the alleged affair between David and former personal assistant Rebecca Loos. David previously revealed the key secret to their relationship’s survival.
