Riyad Mahrez announced his retirement from international football live on beIN SPORTS just minutes after Algeria were eliminated from the World Cup by Switzerland. The five-time Premier League winner confirmed the decision immediately following the 2-0 defeat in Vancouver.
Emotional Announcement on Live Television
Speaking to beIN SPORTS after the match, Mahrez said: "I confirm, this was my last competition, it's over." Reflecting on the game, he added: "Our aim was to go through and I think it was a game we could have won. But we conceded twice on mistakes and at this level, you can't get away with it."
Mahrez was substituted with 20 minutes remaining and appeared visibly crestfallen as he made the announcement. He also expressed gratitude to Algerian supporters for their backing.
International Career Highlights
The 35-year-old winger amassed 119 caps and scored 40 goals for Algeria. He was a key member of the squad that won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2019. In his final group stage appearance against Austria, Mahrez scored twice.
"There are always positives to take away from matches: we did manage to get out of the group stage, but we conceded too many goals to aspire to more. This was my last match with Algeria," he said.
Club Career and Achievements
Mahrez helped Manchester City clinch 10 major honours across five seasons, including four Premier League titles. He also won the Premier League with Leicester City in 2016. In July 2023, he joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli in a deal worth up to £30 million, after City had paid £60 million for him in 2018.
During City's historic Treble-winning campaign, Mahrez netted 15 goals in 47 appearances. Reflecting on his time at the Etihad, he said: "To play for Manchester City has been an honour and privilege. I came to City to win trophies and enjoy my football. I achieved all that and so much more."
Recent Club Developments
Mahrez contributed eight goals and 15 assists for Al-Ahli last season. Reports have emerged that he mutually agreed to terminate his contract with the Jeddah-based club early, though no official confirmation has been made.
