Colors of Evil: Black has gripped Netflix audiences since its release, becoming a must-watch Polish crime thriller based on a bestselling novel trilogy by Małgorzata Oliwia Sobczak. The story follows prosecutor Leopold Bilski, played by Jakub Gierszał, as he investigates a series of disturbing murders in the seemingly peaceful town of Kashubia.
The plot thickens when a young boy, Piotrus Sarman, vanishes, forcing Bilski to race against time. During the search, the body of another boy, Adam Ponznanski, is discovered, raising more questions. As Bilski digs deeper, long-buried secrets within the community begin to surface.
Who Is the Killer in Colors of Evil: Black?
Warning: This article contains spoilers.
The simple answer is that there is no killer in Colors of Evil: Black. The film begins with Adam's harrowing death: he climbs into a car with an unidentified figure and later is decapitated in the woods. However, it emerges that Adam panicked and flung open the car door to escape, causing a fatal accident. His death was entirely accidental, not murder.
The decapitation scenes show the disposal of Adam's body, not the murder itself. While the identity of Adam's companion remains unknown, Nicki is charged with disposing of the remains. Nicki severs the child's head, places it between the legs, and buries the body to mimic a ritualistic killing.
The Vampire Legend Connection
The burial method echoes a local vampire legend about the Łopi. According to ancient custom, children born still within their amniotic sac were considered cursed. To dispel evil, the sac had to be removed through a ritual and fed to the child. If not, the child would need to be killed and beheaded to prevent them from becoming a vampire.
Viewers learn that Nicki is the illegitimate son of prolific child sex offender Chojnacki Sr., born from the abuse of a 14-year-old victim. The late meat magnate had abused numerous children from the church choir, with crimes concealed by locals. Nicki's troubled upbringing made him mentally unstable, leading him to abduct Piotrus.
At the film's start, it is revealed that Piotrus was born still inside his amniotic sac—a detail Nicki overheard in a restaurant, motivating the kidnapping. Fortunately, Piotrus is rescued in time, and the town's generational trauma and cover-up are finally exposed.
Colors of Evil: Black is streaming on Netflix now.
