Zlatan Ibrahimovic was left far from impressed by comments from a FOX co-pundit on France's World Cup win over Senegal. The Swedish legend, working for FOX Sports throughout the 2026 FIFA World Cup, seemed to brand fellow pundit Alexi Lalas 'ignorant' in his most recent swipe at the former United States men's national team player.
Ibrahimovic and Thierry Henry have both linked up with FOX Sports this summer, with the two ex-strikers ranking among the greatest players in world football history. They are joined by Lalas, a permanent football pundit for FOX Sports and former USMNT star. Supporters believe Ibrahimovic and Henry have found it difficult to embrace his opinions.
Lalas went viral for inadvertently uttering a swear word during the coverage, and now Ibrahimovic has hinted he lacks knowledge. On Tuesday, Lalas, Ibrahimovic and Henry witnessed France defeat Senegal 3-1 at New York/New Jersey Stadium. It was a balanced opening period, with Senegal appearing the more threatening side, but then Kylian Mbappe took charge.
Mbappe netted France's first goal following a magnificent pass from Michael Olise, and Bradley Barcola subsequently doubled the advantage. Senegal grabbed one back in the closing moments, before Mbappe bagged his second and re-established the two-goal cushion.
Following the match, Lalas tried to spark a discussion about whether the French national side displayed arrogance during the opening half. 'The reality is, if they are arrogant, it's because they can do things like that,' Lalas added, pointing to an impressive display. While Lalas attempted to backtrack, Ibrahimovic appeared unimpressed by the suggestion.
Though Ibrahimovic hails from Sweden, he spent considerable time in France with Paris Saint-Germain and shares a close friendship with Frenchman Henry. 'It's not arrogance, it's confidence. Ignorant people will say it's arrogance, intelligent people it's confidence,' Ibrahimovic said in response. During Ibrahimovic's retort, Henry gazed at the camera with widened eyes, heightening the uncomfortable atmosphere.
This isn't their first confrontation. Following the USMNT's victory over Paraguay, Ibrahimovic criticised Lalas for placing excessive pressure on the squad. Presenter Rebecca Lowe had to raise her finger as she switched away from the coverage, with Ibrahimovic and Lalas continuing their dispute.
Ibrahimovic is renowned for his unflinching candour, and FOX Sports capitalised on this by subjecting him to a lie detector examination. Ibrahimovic was asked whether he respected his fellow pundits' views, and despite answering affirmatively, it was established that he wasn't being honest. FOX Sports subsequently had the analysts respond to Ibrahimovic's frankness at the beginning of a fresh broadcast. Yet again, Ibrahimovic seemed to single out Lalas. 'Rebecca, you look great. Thierry, you look sharp, Monsieur. Alexi ... we can discuss,' Ibrahimovic joked.
Nevertheless, Ibrahimovic maintained that it was 'all love' between him and his colleagues. It's merely Day 6 of the FIFA World Cup, and Ibrahimovic and Lalas have already generated multiple viral moments.
