Yamal's Mum Praises Merino; Agent Clarifies Alvarez Move

The Arsenal hierarchy will eagerly tune in to the World Cup to stay up to date with their current stars and potential transfer targets. The major tournament kicks off on Thursday, with 48 teams competing for the coveted trophy.

There are 16 representatives from the red side of north London across the Atlantic, including Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz and Mikel Merino. A number of stars that Mikel Arteta is interested in adding to his reigning Premier League-winning squad are also in action.

The Spaniard will have a keen eye on the United States, Canada and Mexico event as he aims to strengthen his squad ahead of the 2026/27 season in August.

Here, Mirror Football has all the latest coming out of the Emirates Stadium.

Lamine Yamal's Mum Singles Out Gunners Star

Lamine Yamal's mother has singled out Mikel Merino as her underrated player during a conversation with her superstar son. The Barcelona youngster, who is playing at the World Cup alongside Merino for Spain, named some lesser-praised players on his YouTube channel.

Yamal brought up Ferran Torres, Thomas Muller and Gerard Martin as his underrated players before asking for his mother's input. She responded: "Merino from Arsenal. I'm a big fan of Merino."

Merino has been a huge player for both club and country, netting 10 goals in 42 caps for Spain and making 23 goal contributions for Arsenal across 78 appearances.

Agent Speaks Out on Move

Julian Alvarez's agent Fernando Hidalgo has revealed that no contact has been made by Real Madrid for his client. The Atletico Madrid striker has become a hot commodity in the transfer market with Arsenal, Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain all interested.

However, Hidalgo has told 365Scores that despite reports in Spain indicating otherwise, no official approach has been made for Alvarez. He said: "We have no information on the matter, and no one has contacted us about it."

Barcelona are already said to have bid for the Argentina international, while Arsenal hold a long-term interest in Alvarez dating back to his time at Manchester City. The Argentina international has refused to comment on his future but admitted several months ago that he could not guarantee he would be at Atletico next season.
