Vernon Kay Steps Away from Radio 2 for Daughter's University Tours

Vernon Kay, the BBC Radio 2 presenter, has announced he will take a brief break from his show to support his daughter as she prepares for university. The 52-year-old host, who recently separated from his wife Tess Daly, told listeners he would be off air on June 19 to accompany their daughter Amber to university open days.

Family Time Amidst Personal Changes

Vernon revealed the news during his regular broadcast, explaining that he would be taking Friday off to visit universities with Amber, who is heading off to higher education next year. He joked about stepping away from broadcasting to return to further education before clarifying the real reason for his absence.

“I’m taking our youngest to open days around universities and I’m really looking forward to it. It’s an exciting time in life, and also I get to hold her hand,” Vernon said. He added that the experience would be sweet, whether on campuses or walking around towns.

Supporting His Daughter

The presenter, who shares two daughters with Tess Daly—Amber and Phoebe, aged 21—emphasized the importance of being there for his child during this milestone. The couple announced their amicable split in May after 23 years together, stating they remain great friends and committed co-parents.

In a joint statement, they said: “After much consideration, and with a deep sense of care and respect for one another, we have made the decision to separate amicably. This has not been an easy choice, but it comes from a place of mutual understanding and a shared desire for what is best for both of us.”

The family currently resides in a six-bedroom home in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, with no immediate plans for either parent to move out.
