A Prime Video spy drama has landed on ITVX and looks like a must-watch for James Bond fans.
Espionage thriller Citadel stars Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas as two amnesiac secret agents and ex-lovers who are brought back into the field by enigmatic spymaster Bernard Orlick (played by Stanley Tucci).
The plot revolves around two elite spies whose memories were wiped following a brutal betrayal. Produced by the Russo brothers (Avengers: Endgame), the series follows Nadia Sinh (Chopra) and Mason Kane (Madden) as they race against time to remember their past lives as spies.
Mason must track down former partner Nadia, in order to stop a powerful shadow agency from destroying everything. The pair had also enjoyed a passionate romance in their past secret-agent lives and will be naturally drawn to one another, with Nadia saving his back on more than one occasion.
A synopsis for the series reads: 'Global spy agency Citadel has fallen, and its agents' memories were wiped clean. Now the powerful syndicate, Manticore, is rising in the void. Can the Citadel agents recollect their past and summon the strength to fight back?'
Citadel originally aired on Prime Video on April 28, 2023, and is now streaming on ITVX for free. Over the past three years, the show has seen mixed reviews with some fans claiming it is a 'perfect' watch for James Bond fans.
On Rotten Tomatoes, one person wrote: 'It's soo fun with all the plot twist! Can't wait for the next season!!!'
A second chimed in: 'It wasn't perfect, but it was much better than much of the other action media pushed out. I think it's worth watching if you like James Bond and Kingsmen.'
Rating the show 4/5, a third fan explained: 'As my love for James Bond and Bourne movies, it’s just fun to watch, kind of an 80/90 vibe in storytelling. Not every series can be of the same quality in writing as Jack Ryan or even Treadstone, but they canceled that show. Quality always loses over ratings just sometimes enjoy what you get it’s a tv show.'
'It's a good/ok show with a few twists and turns, but at the end of the day, its dialogue is a little cheesy at times (think 90's Bond style) and reminiscent of a soap opera, but with spies,' added another.
Is there a Citadel season two?
The second season of Citadel is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video as Mason and Nadia plunge headfirst into a brand new mission with even greater stakes than before.
A synopsis teases: 'When a terrifying new threat emerges, the three are pulled back into action. Now they must recruit an unlikely team of skilled new operatives and launch a globe-spanning mission to stop a conspiracy that could reshape humanity.'
'With blockbuster action, shocking betrayals, and an expanded ensemble of mysterious agents, the stakes have never been higher – and anyone could be friend or foe.'
Citadel season one is streaming now on ITVX.
