A clip that appeared to show Charli XCX looking unimpressed as Taylor Swift took the stage at the MTV Video Music Awards was created through editing, not a genuine reaction. The footage, which spread across social media, was cut from Nirvana's Video Vanguard Award speech and placed over the moment the crowd reacted to Taylor's address at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
Fake Clip Debunked
The doctored video was quickly called out after viewers noticed the camera never panned to Charli when Taylor was on stage. Despite the viral moment, speculation about a strained relationship between the two singers has persisted since 2024.
Rumours began after the release of Charli XCX's most successful album to date, Brat. As reported by Harper's Bazaar, one track, 'Sympathy Is A Knife', appeared to be inspired by Taylor, with Charli expressing feelings of insecurity around the country-pop star.
Lyrics Spark Fan Theories
Fans of both artists believe Taylor's song is a response to Charli's. The lyrics read: "Don’t know if I’m spiralling / One voice tells me that they laugh / George says I’m just paranoid / Don’t wanna see her backstage at my boyfriend’s show / Fingers crossed behind my back / I hope they break up real quick."
Taylor briefly dated Matty Healy in 2023. Charli is close friends with the frontman and is married to George Daniel, The 1975's drummer.
Past Friendship and Collaboration
Last year, when Taylor released her 12th studio album The Life of a Showgirl, fans believed the seventh track, 'Actually Romantic', was aimed at Charli. The lyrics say: "I heard you call me ‘Boring Barbie’ when the coke’s got you brave." The song continues: "High-fived my ex and then said you’re glad he ghosted me / Wrote me a song saying it makes you sick to see my face / Some people might be offended / But it’s actually sweet."
In a Vanity Fair interview, Charli was asked about the song but declined to comment. She did, however, discuss how people portrayed her 'party girl' image.
Taylor and Charli XCX were previously close and collaborated in the past. The 34-year-old Briton performed on the 1989 World Tour and opened the Reputation World Tour.
