Tom Hanks Rides New York Subway Like Local Commuter

Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks surprised New Yorkers this week when he was spotted riding the subway like a local commuter. The 69-year-old Forrest Gump star, known for his down-to-earth persona, used public transportation to navigate the city while wearing a face mask and cap. Despite his efforts to blend in, eagle-eyed fans recognised him and snapped photos.

Hanks, dressed in a khaki jacket, dark gray sweater, black trousers and a green Yankees baseball cap, looked like a typical New Yorker as he stood on the subway. His low-key appearance contrasted with his attendance at prestigious events, including a meeting with the late Queen of England alongside his wife, Rita Wilson.

Speaking exclusively to HELLO! at the premiere of Lena Dunham's upcoming Netflix rom-com Too Much, the couple shared details of their best date in London. When asked, Hanks replied: 'The Jubilee!' Wilson added: 'That was incredible,' to which her husband joked: 'That rates as a date!' She recalled seeing Elton John, Sir Paul McCartney, Grace Jones and Tom Jones, while Hanks quipped they were 'wondering why they were there,' though delighted to be invited.

The couple celebrated their 37th wedding anniversary in April 2025, with Hanks sharing a selfie to mark the occasion. They first met on the set of Bosom Buddies in 1981 and reunited four years later on the film Volunteers, where they fell in love. Hanks told GQ: 'Rita and I just looked at each other and – kaboing – that was that.'

The pair have two sons, Chet and Truman, and Hanks is stepfather to Colin and E.A. from his first marriage to Samantha Lewes, who died from lung cancer in 2002. E.A., now 43, explores her mother's past in her book The 10: A Memoir of Family And The Open Road, recounting a six-month road trip to learn about her mother's life.
