A statue of Tina Turner unveiled in her hometown of Brownsville, Tennessee, has sparked outrage among fans, who have labelled it a 'travesty' and 'a hate crime'. The 10ft monument was revealed on Saturday (27 September) during an annual ceremony honouring the late singer, who died in 2023.
The sculpture, created by Atlanta-based artist Fred Ajanogha, depicts Turner mid-performance, striking a pose with a microphone. However, fans quickly took to social media to criticise the likeness, with many questioning whether the artist had studied photographs of the star.
One fan described the statue as 'a tragedy', adding that Turner 'deserved better'. Another called it 'a travesty', while others expressed disbelief at the design. The backlash has gone viral, with the statue becoming a focal point of online debate.
