Tamzin Outhwaite has candidly shared her profound personal journey towards accepting her son's transgender identity, describing it as a lengthy and challenging process that ultimately led to a place of joy and understanding.
Initial Struggles and Emotional Turmoil
The celebrated EastEnders actress, now 55, revealed that she initially found the news that her child identified as transgender to be deeply distressing and difficult to comprehend. Speaking openly about her experiences, Outhwaite admitted that her perspective has transformed dramatically over several years.
A Mother's Honest Admission
"I did have two daughters and now I have a son and a daughter—that's quite easy for me to say now, but it wasn't maybe six or seven years ago," Outhwaite confessed during an appearance on the popular Parenting Hell podcast hosted by Rob Beckett and Josh Widdicombe.
The actress explained that her 17-year-old child, Flo, began identifying as a boy at the age of ten, which prompted a period of family adjustment and emotional processing. Outhwaite typically refrains from discussing her children publicly but made an exception for the podcast as it is Flo's favourite programme.
The Path to Understanding and Acceptance
Outhwaite has now reflected extensively on their family's personal struggles, telling The Mirror newspaper: "It's been a long journey, a very long journey, but we're in a great place now."
She elaborated on the transformation in her thinking, stating: "I'm just happy that he's happy, and that's how I feel at the moment. He's thriving, absolutely thriving."
Therapeutic Support and Family Unity
In July 2025, Outhwaite revealed that she initially considered Flo coming out as transgender to be "ludicrous," but found acceptance through dedicated therapeutic work and open family conversations. "Until you're going through it yourself with your child, it's difficult to judge the situation," she told Beckett and Widdicombe during their podcast discussion.
The actress emphasized the importance of professional support, explaining: "Working back from that with talking, family therapy, therapy on Flo's side as well, talking with family and realising you're not alone." She acknowledged finding the experience "distressing" initially but highlighted how "we worked together as a family and with outside help" to reach their current positive place.
Celebrating Her Son's True Identity
Outhwaite expressed immense pride in her son's development and personality beyond his gender identity. "The maddest thing is that it's not the most interesting thing about him," she observed thoughtfully.
"He's an incredibly funny, intelligent boy. And I'm watching him grow into a wonderful human who's very talented. And to see him thriving is just nothing but relief and joy for me, really. Because there were some dark times," the actress revealed with emotional honesty.
Personal Background and Professional Life
Outhwaite shares Flo with her former husband, Lucifer star Tom Ellis, to whom she was married from 2006 until their separation in 2014. She was subsequently in a relationship with Tom Child from 2018 to 2024 and maintains a close friendship with him.
The actress remains best known for her portrayal of Melanie Owen in the long-running BBC soap opera EastEnders. She first appeared on the series from 1998 to 2002 before returning for a brief stint between 2018 and 2019. Her extensive television credits also include prominent roles in dramas such as New Tricks and Hotel Babylon.
Through her candid revelations, Outhwaite has offered a window into the complex emotional landscape that families navigate when supporting transgender children, ultimately emphasizing the transformative power of love, understanding, and professional guidance.
